In April-May of 2016, I was set to do a month-long production internship at a radio station in Nanaimo, BC. I managed to rent a place to stay from some nice folks. Also during this time, I was commissioned to write music for a yoga video project produced by my friend and longtime collaborator, Sarah Hudson of Studio Optica. So when I travelled to Nanaimo to stay for a month, I brought my recording desk (Carol Mobile Two), a couple mics, and my guitar. I was going to be busy.

During the day, I biked to the radio station and learned how to produce radio commercials. During the evening and night, I quietly set up and improvised longer, drone-like pieces for this yoga video project. This was a new approach for me, as I was used to writing tightly composed and structured songs in whatever band I was in. Now I just improvised freely, no worries about lyrics or melody. I believe that the quiet surroundings and solitude in the evenings influenced the music heavily. The timing and environment couldn't have been more perfect for me to be open and experimental.

I will say that this music might not be for everyone. These pieces wander and drone hypnotically, but that was the intention. Maybe you can use it for yoga, or an evening of spacing out. To me, this marks a specific time, place and experience that I will always remember.
